ZOARA COMFORT DOG

If everyone could start their day petting a dog that loves them, the world would be a far better place.

Island Lutheran Church, in partnership with Lutheran Church Charities, a national LCMS ministry based in Northbrook, IL, utilizes the unique traits of a dog to bring comfort, help, and hope to those hurting and in need in the community and surrounding areas.

Sometimes comfort walks in on 4 paws.

Zoara Comfort Dog is a new ministry partner at Island Lutheran Church. Trained handlers, all members of Island Lutheran Church, lead this working dog five days a week to visit hospitals, schools, senior centers/nursing/care centers, hospice, charities and community organizations, VA Clinics, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the Airport, etc. Her team also deploys in crisis or disaster situations when requested.

Zoara Comfort Dog, an AKC Golden Retriever, has 2,000 hours of training and is passive and gentle when working with the public. Zoara wears a vest that says “please pet me “. In some situations, this encourages people to relax enough to talk about their distress and begin the healing process. A dog is an effective communicator because they help people feel safe, they are nonjudgmental and demonstrate unconditional love. Comfort Dogs calm people, work with special needs individuals, veterans, the elderly, and are often used in counseling situations. The ministry is not just about a dog, it is about using a dog as a bridge to bring the mercy, compassion, presence, and proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need.
