Dear Family,I saw these Easter Lilies as I pulled up at the church this evening; one of the family had planted them in remembrance of this year's Easter. Great idea, I mused. Then it hit me-- 15 plants... it was the 15th of March when we last worshipped together under the same roof.  Wow! It seems like so long ago!! Here's a question I was asked by a brother pastor: "What have you learned about being church during the pandemic?"  The question may be one you want to ask yourself; answers may not come without a bit of honest wrestling.  Still, I believe it's a very important question; I've asked a couple of our leaders if we might dedicate time this summer to reflecting upon it.  So... your thoughts? Send me what you come up with!
Truth be told, i miss your bright faces, your cheerful voices, and your hugs! It seems I'm not alone. Last weekend as folks gathered to receive the Lord's Body and Blood there was a common refrain: we miss being together. When will we be back together?  My devotional time led me to one of my favorite authors, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. On the subject of Christian fellowship, Bonhoeffer wrote,
"The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer. ... The believer feels no shame, as though he were still living too much in the flesh, when he yearns for the physical presence of other Christians."  (Life Together, pg. 19)
Be assured, your leaders, President Terry, Head Elder Dave, and I are listening to our leaders (civic and church) in order to discern the Lord's will on when and how we might gather in corporate worship. Very good conversations, healthy prayers!  The Lord will lead us. In the meantime, we are still Family and it's good to be Family when it's the Lord's Family.
The news of Barbara Lunick's retirement reminded me of the value of every moment we are given together. She and Don will be missed! The Family was blessed by their service for many years. It is well known they drove a long distance every Sunday and yet, were usually the first at church. Their dedication and sacrifices over the years are an inspiration to me. Like all Family members, Barbara and Don needed the Lord's forgiveness; through us they received it and to us they shared it. Please hold Barbara and Don up in your prayers. Why don't you send them a card and gift? Their address is: 1922 Little Neck Rd. Bloomingdale, GA 31302.  Or... you could do what Mary and I did: Give a monetary gift to the ILC Member Helping Member Fund in honor of Barbara. We used the "Give" button on the ILC Website. It was so easy. Don't forget to type Barbara Lunick in the memo box of the Member Helping Member Fund designation. Let me know if you need help figuring out the online giving. Mary and I have been giving our offering through online or bank automatic draft systems for almost thirty years. Most importantly, pause, give thanks for Barbara and Don, and treasure the moments you are given with people, especially fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord's Family.
Speaking of the Family, please find the attached Prayer Request Document. Our Family members are talking to each other, sharing their joys, sorrows, hopes, fears, and challenges. Take time to read through the list of prayer requests. Pray. Give thanks for the Family...  as I give thanks for you!
One last item, an important item, so important I'm going to use all caps:  MY SCHEDULED HOME VISITS ARE POSTPONED UNTIL WE RETURN TO WORSHIP.  Hang in there... don't fret... the "Lord willing and the Crik don't rise" (that's what my grandpa used to say), we will be sitting together in your family room looking at pictures of your loved ones, laughing, and praying! I'll walk in your yard... notice the flowers, maybe even an Easter Lily, and treasure our moments together!
